Welcome! A brief history of G-H ACCW: In 1929, the Galveston Diocesan Council of Catholic Women organized at the urging of U.S. Catholic Bishops (USCCB) to affiliate with the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW). As an early project, the women of the Diocese of Galveston established an endowment fund in support of Seminarians. The project became a beacon for the Seminarians. This fund was incorporated in 1933 and named The Catholic Clerical Student Fund (CCSF) and still contributes to St. Mary’s Seminary.
The Bishops put forth a threefold purpose for this unified group.
give a common voice to All Catholic Women in the United States in matters of national welfare and issues of concern to the Church.
a large, unified, national group would ensure that national committees and national movements would recognize our Catholic values and principles, especially in the areas of religious, moral and general welfare across our country.
the Bishops felt that uniting the work of existing Catholic Women’s Organizations would enable greater service and have a greater impact in meeting the needs of our times.
On behalf of the executive board of the Galveston Houston Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (G-H ACCW) along with our Deanery / Vicariate Representatives and Affiliates Organizations throughout our Archdiocese - we are so happy that you are here to learn more about G-H ACCW. One of the main points we would like to communicate is:
As a practicing Catholic Women, you are a member of G-H ACCW.
Over the next two years, I will do my very best as your president. As we embrace this Jubilee Year of Pilgrims of Hope – let us remember that the pilgrim’s journey is not individual, but communal and marked by a growing vitality leading one always closer to the cross. Spirituality, Leadership and Service - are the commissions we work through to carry out our mission. Commissions allow women to pursue areas of special interest and expertise while providing opportunities to grow and to know and use the resources of the Church and society. I ask that you ask our Commission Chairs how you can help? Our Archdiocese is dynamic, multicultural, generous, and filled with Women with grateful hearts and willing hands. As we began highlighting Women’s Groups in our Archdiocese - we note “Our Catholic Women Shine!”. Just like our founding Women in 1929, our Archdiocese today is abundantly blessed with Catholic Women’s Organizations that are a beacon and guided by the Holy Spirit. I look forward to meeting you and sharing about G-H ACCW.
I encourage you and your organizations to join us on this communal journey. Peace be with you, Lisa Johnson G-H ACCW President 2024-2026
"For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope. God's word helps us find reasons for that hope." Pope Francis
